This series of wall sculptures, which started off as investigations into the various states of metal, evolved into a series exhibiting many of the formal elements of paintings. These works in sculpted brass and aluminum, sand and wood refine a visual language the artist has been developing since 2022.
Incorporating abstract “robotic” forms, the wall sculptures explore the tension between the technological and the organic. Kapoor’s formal training in industrial design ignited his curiosity for manufacturing and materials, with his focus to understand the relation between materials and form.Kapoor’s relationship with “roboticism” is derived in part from his experience working in digital fabrication (3 and 7-axis CNC machines) as well as his ideas around layering and repetition.Ultimately, the artist is interested in creating works which will viscerally respond to, defined by texture, mass, spatial relations, and color.
Kapoor’s approach to his art is informed partly by his experience as a designer. All the sculptures in the series were meticulously planned before work began. With the exception of the manipulation of the aluminum, each component was executed in a manner that emphasizes the contrast between the hand of the artist and the precision of the machine. As described by the artist, his production methodology “seeks to find a balance between rehearsed fabrication methods, allowing room for material discovery and exploration”.
