Pitch Perfect
Benjamin Reynaert, ELLE Decor, February 3, 2026
New York-based gallery Dernier Cri makes its debut with Night Shift, a moody, tightly curated group show that takes a single idea, the color black, and stretches it into something surprisingly expansive. Opening on the Upper East Side, the exhibition gathers newly commissioned works rendered entirely in black, where darkness becomes both the artists’ material and message. Founder Michael McGraw, long known for shaping the narratives around top design talents, brings an editorial eye to curation, favoring pieces that reveal how form, texture, and light behave within a restrained palette. Highlights range from Julian Mayor’s faceted metalwork to Casey Johnson’s primal, hand-carved forms and the U.S. debuts of Todd Marshard and Marit Harte, whose works explore depth, tactility, and transformation. The effect is less somber than seductive: a reminder that the color black, in the right hands, sharpens perception and heightens emotion. Night Shift runs through March 5, 2026 derniercrinyc.com
