Handbuilt from dozens of long, twirled ropes of porcelain, Twist vessels rely on spontaneity and leaps of faith to capture a sense of frozen motion. This series explores and exploits the tensile properties of twisted coils, often pushing porcelain -- prone to collapse and cracking -- to its brink. The work’s sense of movement and lightness belies a tangled, dense cavity, where the coils are secured and attached. Twist represents a culmination of several ongoing inquiries: when it is illuminated, light play casts ever changing shadows; it combines influences that repeatedly appear throughout Kaplan’s work, including basketry, nests and tangles. Its whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And yet, texture and intricacy give way to an overall feel of fluidity and balance.
