Crewel vessels are hand-built from scores of individually textured porcelain coils, which are then vitrified at 2,232 degrees Fahrenheit. The works invite curiosity and material confusion, given their resemblance to textiles and basketry, a frequent source of inspiration. Kaplan creates the vessels intuitively, placing coils of varying lengths one atop the next. Resulting in maze-like patterns, this additive process creates a final work whereby the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. Kaplan also plays with negative and positive space, allowing light to seep between coils, causing the works to glow and cast mottled shadows that shift with the changing light.
